Sumitomo Corporation says it has won an order to construct a thermal power plant to power Thilawa and Yangon, reports the Japan Times on March 6.

The order from Myanmar Electric Power Enterprise, an affiliate of the Ministry of Electric Power, is worth about 5 billion yen [K42.8 billion], Sumitomo said on March 6.

According to the company, the plant will have two 25,000-kilowatt gas turbines. The first unit is set to launch operations in March 2016 and the second unit in July 2016.

The plant – funded by soft loans from the Japanese government - will supply electricity to the Thilawa economic zone and Yangon.

Mitsubishi Hitachi Power Systems Ltd will supply the turbines and generators.
