President U Thein Sein’s message on the 59th anniversary of the founding of Kayin State claims the cooperation of all ethnic groups on equal terms is of utmost importance for nation building, yet some Kayah, Kayin and Shan representatives say they bitterly suffer inequality.

Speaking on November 7, Kayin or Karen State Day, Sai Nyunt Lwin, secretary of the Shan Nationalities League for Democracy or SNLD said: “Skirmishes happen one after another due to lack of equality. When Kayin ethnic people enjoy equality in terms of rights, they will support the government.”

Pado Saw Kwe Htoo Win, secretary of the Karen National Union, said that the cooperation of all ethnic people on equal terms means the authority to encourage a flourishing of the nationality, literature and culture and the right to make their voices heard.

Mahn Aung Pyi Soe, vice chairman of the Phalon Sawaw Party, said President U Thein Sein sent his message to the ceremony of Kayin State Day in Thiri Ground in Hpa-an City, Kayin State on November 7, noting that it was the first message of its kind.

He pointed out the problem of equality for local people when the local authorities do not inform the people about implementing projects in the region.

He said the authorities should not claim the armed ethnic groups are not willing to take part in regional development and that the Kayin State government does not have full authority to manage.

Sai Nyunt Lwin claimed the best solution for equality is a federal union system that satisfies the desires of all ethnic groups.
