Police have arrested four activists who staged a demonstration outside the Chinese embassy in Yangon over the shooting death of a protester at the controversial Chinese-run copper mine in Letpadaung.
YANGON (AFP) – Two Chinese workers kidnapped and threatened at a China-backed copper mine in Myanmar have been released, their firm said on May 19, after they were held by activists demanding a halt to the controversial project.
The Myanmar Wanbao Copper Mining Ltd, operating the copper mining project in Salingyi Township, will appoint residents from 26 villages in the project area to trainee positions in the company.
Myanmar Presidential Office Minister Hla Tun told Parliament on Thursday that both the Environment Impact Assessment (EIA) and Social Impact Assessment (SIA) reports for the Latpadaung copper mine project will be submitted to the government by September.
