President Thein Sein has called a state of emergency in Meiktila in response to ongoing and increasing sectarian riots between Muslims and Buddhists in the town.

The announcement was made on the president's website on March 22 at around 4pm: “Due to the situation of devastating of peace [sic] and tranquility in Myeikhtilar district, Mandalay Division, the President office proclaims the State of Emergency (Act 144) for national security.”

Local police have confirmed to AFP that 20 people have been killed so far in the riots since they began on Wednesday.
