Rescuers were frantically searching for survivors March 14 after an overloaded ferry sank in rough waters off the coast of western Myanmar killing more than 30 people and leaving at least a dozen more missing.

Assistance Association for Political Prisoners claims to have received reports of torture used on students recently detained by police in Letpadan, according to a press release from the NGO on March 13.

NGO Fortify Rights has called on the Myanmar government to immediately and unconditionally release a group of five Rohingya prisoners of conscience being held in Sittwe prison, Rakhine State, according to a press release from the NGO on March 14.

The United Nations criticised on March 13 a crackdown on student-led protests in Myanmar this week, demanding that the demonstrators be released and that the country investigate reports of excessive police force.

China summoned Myanmar’s ambassador in Beijing on March 13 after four Chinese were killed by a bomb dropped by a Myanmar warplane near the border, state-run Xinhua newsagency reported.
