Helen May says it was after she was introduced to a local woman in Yangon struggling to cope with an alcoholic father that she decided her outreach for people affected by a person’s alcoholism might prove useful in Myanmar.

Yangon municipal police moved in to demolish the Michaungkan protest camp at around 3 am in the morning on February 26 and arrested 14 land rights protesters and four other people.

Two men were forcibly recruited by the Myanmar military in Yangon recently when they went to look for work but one managed to escape, according to a report by the Kantarawaddy Times and Burma News International on February 25.

China’s Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Hong Lei says that China forbids any organization and individual carrying out activities that undermine Sino-Myanmar relations or the stability of the border area on Chinese territory.

UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Zeid Ra’ad Al Hussein has warned that Myanmar “seems headed in the wrong direction and needs urgently to get back on track” in a crucial year for the country’s democratic transition and long-term reconciliation, according to a press release issued on February 25.
